First Bank manager steals N650m from 35 customers

A bank manager from a branch of First Bank in Osogbo, Mr. Adeniyi Talabi, has been apprehended by the Osun State Police Command on Tuesday.

The allegation against him is the embezzlement of a staggering N650 million belonging to 35 bank customers.

According to the command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, the suspect supposedly carried out the fraudulent act by deceitfully obtaining funds from the victims and then siphoning the money through an illicit transaction known as proof of funds.

An investigation into the matter has been initiated, and the bank has suspended the accused individual. Upon the completion of the investigation, Talabi and any accomplices will face charges in court.

In a statement issued by Opalola, it was disclosed, “The Osun State Police Command, in its efforts to rid the state of criminal elements, has apprehended a serial fraudster, one Adeniyi Sunday Talabi, aged 47, residing in Army Barracks Area, Kelebe, Iragbiji Road, Osogbo. He is a manager in one of the First Bank PLC branches in Osogbo, accused of offenses including fraud, Obtaining money under pretense (OBT), Conversion, and Stealing, amounting to the sum of N650,850,000 in an illegal product called PROOF of FUNDS, which involved a total number of 35 victims.”

It was further emphasized that the suspect’s employment with First Bank Nigeria Plc has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Umar, reiterated the command’s commitment to eradicating criminal activities in the state and cautioned wrongdoers that Osun would not serve as a safe haven for them.
