Fire razes textile shops in Lagos

Textile material shops were destroyed in a fire outbreak in Lagos after a three-storey commercial building housing the items was gutted by flames in the early hours of Saturday.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service disclosed this in a statement issued by its Controller General, Margaret Adeseye.

According to the agency, the incident occurred at about 3:15am at a building located on Oyabiyi Street, opposite the NLC office in Tejuosho, Yaba, where shops stocked with textile materials were engulfed by fire. Firefighters from Somolu, Ilupeju and Sari Iganmu stations were swiftly deployed to the scene and succeeded in containing the blaze, preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings.

“The building, which housed shops and stores containing stacked textile materials, was engulfed by fire,” the statement read. The agency noted that the prompt response helped to bring the situation under control without any reported casualties.

It added that the incident formed part of two separate overnight fire outbreaks recorded across the state, including another at Tower Aluminium Village in Dopemu, Agege, where offices and stores were affected.

“In both incidents, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service ensured that the fires were contained without escalation,” the statement added. Adeseye urged residents and business operators to observe fire safety measures, especially in commercial areas where flammable materials are stored.

“We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and prioritise fire safety precautions at all times,” she said. The agency said investigations were ongoing to determine the causes of the fires.
