Fire guts Alaba market furniture section

A section of the Alaba International Market in Lagos State was engulfed by a fire on Tuesday evening, resulting in the destruction of goods and property whose value has yet to be ascertained.

Videos shared on the social media platform X showed thick smoke and flames rising dramatically from the market’s furniture section, which is located near the Ojo Local Government Secretariat in Ojo town.

An X user named Ikechukwu Ude, who shared footage from the scene, reported that the blaze originated from “a little spark” before it rapidly spread through adjoining shops.

In another clip of the incident, traders were seen standing at a distance, visibly distressed as their sources of livelihood went up in flames.

At the time the videos were recorded, it was unclear whether operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service or any other emergency responders had arrived at the scene.

Eyewitnesses could be heard calling desperately for help and simultaneously accusing the market’s security personnel of responding too slowly to the developing disaster.
