Fire guts 10 shops at Ogunpa market in Ibadan

No fewer than 10 shops were destroyed by fire at the Iya Maryam Adebara Complex in the Ogunpa Market area of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday night.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday.

He said the agency received an emergency call at about 8:11 p.m. from the Baale of Ogunpa, Alhaji Nurudeen Lawal, reporting an outbreak of fire at the market.

According to Akinwande, firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene, where several shops had already been engulfed in flames on arrival.

“Our personnel responded promptly and worked swiftly to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjoining shops and nearby properties,” he said.

He added that officers of the Federal Fire Service joined the operation, helping to bring the blaze under control.

The fire service boss attributed the incident to the fueling of a generator by one of the shop occupants.

“No life was lost in the incident, and we commend the police officers from the Iyaganku Police Headquarters for providing security during the operation,” Akinwande stated.

Authorities have advised traders to exercise caution in the use of generators and other flammable materials to prevent similar incidents in the future.
