Finance ministry debunks N13bn corruption allegation in CNG contract

The Federal Ministry of Finance has publicly denied allegations of awarding N13 billion in contracts without following due process.

In a statement signed by Director of Information and Public Relations, Mohammed Manga, the ministry emphasized its compliance with procurement regulations and clarified that all contracts, including those under the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas, were handled lawfully and transparently.

Manga further clarified that all contracts were awarded in full compliance with the Public Procurement Act, dismissing the allegations of corruption or procedural irregularities as baseless and without merit.

He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and adherence to legal standards in executing government initiatives like the Pi-CNG project.

Reaffirming the Ministry’s dedication to transparency, he stated that the leadership of Minister Wale Edun and Permanent Secretary Lydia Shehu Jafiya has consistently prioritized accountability and due diligence in financial governance.

“The ministry, under the leadership of Mr. Wale Edun and Mrs. Lydia Shehu Jafiya, remains committed to transparency and accountability in its operations. This commitment is reflected in the effective management of the national economy.”, he stated.

Acknowledging the role of the media in promoting good governance, Manga urged journalists to verify information before publication, warning that legal action would be pursued against false or malicious claims.

“The ministry unequivocally states that no contracts were awarded without due process at any time,” he reiterated.

Manga dismissed the allegations as deliberately misleading, aimed at tarnishing the ministry’s reputation and distracting from its ongoing economic recovery initiatives.

He affirmed that the ministry’s actions are in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes economic stability through responsible governance and sound fiscal policy.

Amid ongoing nationwide financial initiatives, the ministry insists that all procurement and contract approvals are conducted within the bounds of the law, upholding transparency, accountability, and public confidence in government spending.

Last month, the Federal Government unveiled a N2.5 billion credit scheme aimed at promoting the conversion of vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas and supporting local manufacturing of conversion kits.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Finance, Credicorp, and the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative.
