The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has said that the government that the government would find a solution to the problem of overspeeding on the third mainland bridge in Lagos.

This was disclosed by the minister during a live appearance on TVC on Wednesday.

This follows the recent fatal accident on the third mainland bridge involving a commercial bus carrying several passengers which as a result of the impact threw two passengers off the bus into the Lagos lagoon.

Umahi said it was a tragic situation and that is partly why he had come straight to Lagos to get first-hand information on the situation as regards the accident.

He stressed that something has to be done to curb the problem of overspeeding by drivers on the bridge.

The minister noted that placing bumps on the bridge may not solve the problem but would rather make it more dangerous.

He said he would meet with his team of engineers in Lagos and the Lagos state government officials to determine the best solution.

“I want to discuss with my team of engineers and the Lagos state government officials, we will discuss and find a solution to this, but something has to be done.

“Sometimes you place bumps and people speeding could also come with a speed on top of the bump, and that becomes even more dangerous.”

He reiterated that something has got to be done and he will have a meeting with his engineers, and officials of Lagos state to brainstorm and find a solution.

Recall the Federal government allocated N15 billion for the repairs of the third mainland bridge in Lagos as contained in the N2.18 trillion supplementary budget.

The amount was tied to urgent comprehensive repairs of the third mainland bridge which was reopened on April 4, 2024.
