FG to start 70,000 hectares dry season wheat farming November

The Federal Government stated on Friday that it would start growing wheat in the dry season on more than 70,000 hectares of land in November.

According to the Punch, the report revealed that the dry season wheat farming would provide a projected harvest of 875,000 metric tonnes, which would be kept in the country’s food reserves.

The minister of agriculture and food security, Abubakar Kyari, revealed this during a briefing on the future of Nigerian agriculture in Abuja.

He stated that the following immediate priority steps will be carried out until the end of 2023: “As part of the National Agricultural Growth Scheme, dry season wheat production will begin in November 2023 as well as Agro Pocket projects funded by the African Development Bank.

“Under this plan, the objective is to grow wheat on more than 70,00 hectares throughout the country’s wheat-growing region, with an anticipated yield of 875,000 metric tones for our food reserves;

“Blending of appropriate fertilizers to support dry season farming this year while making provisions for next year’s farming season well in advance; providing train-the-trainer for extension agents involved in dry season farming in collaboration with wheat producing states and other partners such as flour mills.”
