The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced that the Federal Government’s renewed intervention will boost Nigeria’s grid capacity by 4,000 megawatts by the end of 2026.

This was revealed in a statement by Bolaji Tunji, the minister’s Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations.

According to a statement, this development is part of a new strategic direction approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Adelabu stated that reputable Engineering, Procurement and Construction companies have been engaged to fast-track the delivery of key infrastructure projects needed to achieve this target.

He said the president has approved the allocation of the distribution scope to be executed by other reputable Engineering, Procurement, and Construction companies that possess the required technical, financial, and financing capabilities.

“The strategic decisions aim to increase grid capacity by an additional 4,000MW by the end of 2026, with an aspirational target of an additional 2,000MW, as directed by the Economic Management Team in 2024.

“Noteworthy is the fact that the implementation of the PPI commenced with the installation and inauguration of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations across the country under the Pilot Phase of the PPI, which was manufactured and delivered in October 2023,” he stated.

Adelabu emphasized that the current administration’s commitment has not only revitalized the Siemens Power Project, also known as the Presidential Power Initiative, but has also paved the way for enhanced power supply to critical sectors of the Nigerian economy.

“The inception of the present administration in 2023 brought about renewed vigour to the Siemens Power Project as an accelerated contract was signed to ensure visible progress in the project,” Adelabu said.

He stressed that “no significant progress was made on the project until the current administration took office,” noting that the accomplishments since May 29, 2023, are a testament to a focused and determined government agenda.

“There is no doubt that the Siemens project has witnessed significant improvements since the inauguration of this administration,” Tunji added.

The statement acknowledged that the current administration has made notable progress in the power sector.

A major milestone was the successful installation and commissioning of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations across the country, marking the completion of the pilot phase of the PPI in October 2023.
