The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi has announced the suspension of import duties and taxes on essential food items to make basic necessities more affordable for Nigerians and address the prevalent food inflation in the nation.
This was disclosed in a statement posted by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Communication and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga via his official X handle on Monday.
In a public address on Monday evening, Adeniyi highlighted the widespread economic challenges and outlined the government’s commitment to easing the financial burden on its citizens.
He recognised that global inflation is affecting nations worldwide, including Nigeria, noting that to tackle this, the federal government, through the Nigeria Customs Service, is suspending import duties and taxes on essential food items to make them more affordable.
Adeniyi also stated that the NCS has streamlined export processes to facilitate the efficient movement of Nigerian goods to international markets.
In addition, he noted that the NCS has reduced export procedures to facilitate the movement of Nigerian goods to the international market.
According to him, this program aims to improve commerce, boost the economy, and open up new opportunities.
It also involves the adoption of sophisticated ruling systems, authorized economic operators, and time-release research.
Adeniyi underlined that these reforms will give farmers, artisans, and business owners a quicker route to international markets.
“We are committed to implementing this measure seamlessly to address the problem of hunger in our nation,” he added.
The Customs boss stated that the NCS is stepping up its efforts to curb the spread of arms and dangerous weapons across Nigeria’s land, sea, and airports.
Adeniyi emphasised the value of teamwork and peaceful advancement in fortifying the nation’s borders. He stressed that the breakdown of the supply chain has an impact on foreign investment, trade distortion, instability promotion, increased scarcity, and difficulty collecting taxes.
