The Nigerian federal government, through the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, is set to propose an 800% increase in aircraft navigation fees, effective from September 1, 2024.
This announcement was made by NAMA’s Managing Director, Mr. Umar Farouk, during the 28th League of Aviation and Airport Correspondents Conference in Lagos on Friday.
Farouk explained that the current fees, which were last revised in 2008, could see significant hikes. Specifically, en-route navigation charges are proposed to rise from N2,000 to N18,000, while terminal navigation charges could increase from N6,000 to N104,000 per flight. Additionally, the cost for extending service hours is slated to jump from N50,000 to N450,000 to cover the rising costs of diesel and logistics.
In related developments, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), assured that the government is focused on boosting local airlines’ capabilities and advancing the development of Maintenance Repair Organization facilities across Nigeria.
Keyamo revealed ongoing discussions with international investors from Europe, Asia, America, and the Middle East about investing in MRO facilities. He also highlighted issues with existing bilateral air service agreements that disadvantage Nigerian carriers.
The conference, chaired by Dr. Thomas Ogungbangbe, CEO of CITA Aviation Fueling Ltd., underscored the sector’s struggles with high fuel costs, foreign exchange difficulties, and inadequate infrastructure. Ogungbangbe called for strategic investments in essential infrastructure, improved road networks, and robust public/private partnerships to advance Nigeria’s aviation industry and stimulate economic growth.
