The Federal Government is exploring the option of filling a stagnant lagoon as an alternative to constructing a 3-kilometre bridge on the ongoing Lekki Deep Seaport–Epe–Ijebu-Ode access road.
Minister of Works David Umahi disclosed this during an inspection of the project on Sunday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
He also stated that the project is on track to be completed within 21 months.
Umahi noted that the Federal Government, the project contractor China Harbour Engineering Company, the Dangote Group, and the Lagos State Government are in talks to redesign that section of the access road.
“The Federal Government says the 25km access road linking Lekki Deep Seaport to Epe and Ijebu-Ode will be delivered within its 21-month schedule.
“The government described the project as highly viable and fully on course. The Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, gave the assurance during an inspection of the road project in Lagos on Sunday,” the report read in part.
Umahi also pointed out other challenges affecting the project, including a shrine along the project corridor that has caused minor delays.
He stated that the shrine must be removed and added that he would personally step in if the community did not take action.
Additionally, project planning has accounted for concerns over gas pipelines supplying the Dangote Refinery and Lekki Free Zone, as well as the need to engage community stakeholders.
The Minister provided further details, revealing that the Lekki Deep Seaport–Epe–Ijebu-Ode access road spans 50 km, comprising two 25 km carriageways with three lanes each. The project also includes major bridges measuring 3.5 km and 2.4 km, aimed at improving connectivity to the Lekki Deep Seaport and boosting regional transport efficiency.
Umahi noted that the Federal Government has covered 30% of the project cost, while China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) will finance the remaining 70% through an Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Finance arrangement.
The loan repayment is structured to be recovered via tolls once the road is operational.
