FG confirms delayed salary of Nigerian missions’ abroad staff

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has admitted that Nigerian diplomatic and consular missions are grappling with financial and operational strain, driven by years of budget shortfalls and economic pressures.

Spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said the challenges—ranging from delayed salary payments to outstanding service provider bills—have disrupted the smooth running of missions abroad.

To ease the pressure, the Federal Government has released special intervention funds and set up a committee to review debt profiles. The ministry noted that over 80% of available funds have been disbursed, prioritising payments to service providers, locally recruited staff, and officers’ arrears.

Talks are also underway with the Office of the Accountant-General, the Ministry of Finance, and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to address foreign exchange shortfalls tied to policy changes. Meanwhile, plans are being developed for a long-term funding model built on efficiency and broader public sector reforms.

The ministry reassured Nigerians that the welfare of diplomatic staff remains a priority under President Bola Tinubu, while commending their resilience and host governments’ cooperation during the difficult period.

“With these efforts, Missions have begun to stabilize. In the same vein, the ministry is also working diligently to develop a sustainable financial model for funding our missions abroad, which includes exploring innovative solutions and efficiency measures to ensure long-term operational stability.

“These efforts are integral to the broader public sector financial reforms being implemented by the federal government, aimed at enhancing fiscal governance and ensuring the effective allocation of resources.

“The ministry recognises the resilience and dedication of its diplomatic staff who continue to discharge their duties with commendable patriotism under these difficult circumstances.

“We also thank the host governments, service providers and our international partners for their understanding and continued cooperation.

“The Nigerian government remains unwavering in its commitment to providing the necessary support to all its Missions abroad with a view to enabling them to function at their full capacity,” the statement reads.
