FG arraigns Sowore over alleged false X, Meta posts against Tinubu

The Federal Government has arraigned human rights activist and publisher, Omoleye Sowore, on a five count for allegedly making false posts against President Bola Tinubu on social media.

The suit, filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, also lists X (formerly Twitter) and Meta (owners of Facebook and Instagram) as co-defendants.

According to the charge sheet, Sowore is accused of posting, “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!” on his verified X handle on August 25.

This post allegedly contravenes Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024, which prohibits transmitting false statements capable of causing a breakdown of law and order.

Government prosecutors claim Sowore’s comments were intended to stir public unrest and disaffection against the President. The case is currently ongoing in court, with Sowore present on Tuesday morning.

The Department of State Services filed the charge, accusing Sowore of contravening provisions of the Cybercrimes Act and the Criminal Code Act through his posts on X and Facebook.
