The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority have committed to safeguarding consumer interests in the petroleum sector.
The pledge was made during a courtesy visit on Thursday, when FCCPC CEO Tunji Bello received NMDPRA CEO Farouk Ahmed, the commission said in a statement.
During the meeting, Bello reiterated the commission’s commitment “to ensuring consumer welfare and fair competition in the petroleum industry.”
He assured that the FCCPC would take all necessary measures to protect Nigerian consumers, including those in the petroleum sector, from abuse of market dominance, price manipulation, and other anti-consumer or anti-competitive practices.
Meanwhile, Ahmed called for a closer collaboration with the commission to tackle price distortions, curb anti-competitive practices, and enhance regulatory oversight in the downstream petroleum sector.
“This partnership underscores FCCPC’s statutory mandate under the FCCPA 2018 to safeguard consumers, prohibit restrictive trade practices, and promote fair, transparent markets that benefit all Nigerians,” the statement reads.
last month, the NMDPRA reiterated that filling stations must follow regulations and ensure accurate fuel dispensing.
