FAAN advises passengers arrive early as Lagos airport reconstruction begins

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has advised outbound passengers using the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, to arrive early due to possible delays following the commencement of reconstruction work at the international terminal.

In a travel advisory issued on Friday, the agency urged travelers to allow extra time for their journeys as passenger processing may take longer than usual.

“To ensure a smooth travel experience, we kindly request that passengers leave early for the airport to avoid missing flights, obey all traffic instructions to aid traffic flow, and park vehicles properly in designated car park areas,” the agency stated.

FAAN also appealed for only intending travellers to come to the airport during the reconstruction period, citing limited space.

“We appreciate your cooperation and understanding,” it added.

The project will see the existing terminal facilities demolished and completely rebuilt into a modern, state-of-the-art edifice.

The project will also fix structural errors in the new terminal, where departing and arriving passengers currently share the same access route.

A new road will be built to link directly to the upper departure level, allowing outbound passengers to proceed straight to departures instead of entering through the ground floor and mixing with arriving passengers.

On August 1, 2025, the Federal Executive Council approved about N712 billion for the comprehensive rehabilitation, upgrade, and modernisation of Terminal One (the old terminal) at MMIA.
