The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has again warned that the continuous vandalism of vital national assets—such as oil and gas pipelines, power plants, and energy installations—poses a serious threat to the economy and national development.

NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, made this disclosure on Wed during a workshop and engagement session with selected Kannywood artists in Abuja.

Soneye noted the influential role of the artists in shaping public opinion and urged them to use their platforms to promote the protection of national assets, particularly those managed by NNPC.

He explained that the engagement with Kannywood stars was aimed at strengthening stakeholder relationships and supporting initiatives that enhance energy solutions for Nigerians.

“Vandalism of critical infrastructure—including oil and gas pipelines, power plants, and energy installations—poses a severe threat to our economy, national security, and overall development. We must all play our part in educating the public about the dangers of such acts. As respected figures in society, you have the influence to drive this message home,” Soneye stated.

The NNPC spokesman stated that NNPC plays a central role in Nigeria’s energy security and remains a major contributor to the national grid.

He emphasized the company’s commitment to power generation, citing its investments in key facilities as proof of this dedication.

He pointed out that NNPC currently operates the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant, a fully owned facility supplying vital electricity to the region. Additionally, the company co-owns two major power plants—Afam VI and Okpai I & II—with a combined installed capacity of 1,132 megawatts.

“These facilities play a crucial role in ensuring stable electricity supply to homes, industries, and businesses across the country. Now, imagine if these critical assets were damaged or destroyed by vandals—entire communities would be plunged into darkness, businesses would suffer, and the economy would take a devastating hit. This is why we need your voices to amplify this message,” Soneye added.

He affirmed NNPC’s commitment to driving Nigeria’s energy sustainability and economic growth but emphasized that the company cannot achieve this alone.

He stressed the need for partnerships to raise awareness and promote a culture of responsibility and patriotism among Nigerians.

The event showcased top Kannywood stars, including Sani Danja, Rahma Sadau, Hadiza Gabon, Adam Zango, Mansurah Isah, Umar Sheriff, and several other actors and actresses from northern Nigeria.
