The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has been released from Kuje Prison after meeting his bail condition of N300 million naira.
The Punch stated that Emefiele, who is being tried for a N1.2 billion procurement scam, was discharged on Friday.
The spokesperson for the Kuje Correctional Centre in the FCT, Adamu Duza, confirmed the development on Saturday.
“I can confirm that he (Emefiele) has fulfilled his bail conditions and thus has no reason to remain in our facility. He met his bail condition and was released past 2 p.m. on Friday,” he said.
Justice Hmaza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja granted Emefiele bail in the amount of N300 million. Two sureties, each responsible for an equal sum, are required as part of the bail terms.
Meanwhile, the former CBN governor is under increased scrutiny as the Special Investigator, Jim Obazee, charges him and others of embezzling billions of naira and other financial crimes.
In a report delivered to President Bola Tinubu on December 9, 2023, Emefiele, who served as the head from June 2014 to June 2023, is accused of involvement in $6.23 million in illicit cash transactions.
In addition, he is accused of fraud in the redesign of the naira, among other things.
