Elon Musk launches party to challenge US political establishment

Musk's DOGE team allegedly spying on US govt workers

Elon Musk, tech billionaire and former ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, has unveiled a new political movement—the America Party—aimed at breaking what he calls the United States’ “one-party system.”

The announcement, made on Saturday via X (formerly Twitter), comes amid a growing rift between Musk and Trump. Musk, who was the largest individual donor to Trump’s 2024 campaign, had a public falling out with the president after leading the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency, where he pushed for sweeping budget cuts and job reductions across federal agencies.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system—not a democracy,” Musk posted. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

The launch was preceded by a poll Musk posted on July 4, U.S. Independence Day, asking followers if they supported independence from the traditional two-party system. Over 1.2 million users responded, with a majority voting in favor of a new party.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party—and you shall have it!” Musk declared.

The fallout between Musk and Trump intensified last month over the president’s massive spending legislation, dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill, which Musk staunchly opposed. He criticized Republican lawmakers for backing the bill, accusing them of betraying promises to reduce federal spending and calling the policy “debt slavery.”

Despite resistance, the bill was passed and signed into law, prompting Musk to vow a political counteroffensive. In response, President Trump hinted at possible retaliation, telling reporters that Musk’s immigration status and government contracts could be reviewed.

“We’ll have to take a look,” Trump said when asked whether Musk—who was born in South Africa and became a U.S. citizen in 2002—could face deportation.
