The Eko Electricity Distribution Company has issued a firm warning to its customers, advising them not to pay individuals or groups for the installation of electricity meters.
The company stressed that all payments must be made directly through its official channels.
This alert follows the arrest and arraignment of Mufutau Olohunkemi Bello, who allegedly defrauded a customer in the Ojo Business District of N760,375 by posing as a seller of prepaid meters. Bello faces charges of impersonation, obtaining money under false pretenses, and theft.
Babatunde Lasaki, Eko DisCo’s General Manager of Corporate Communications, condemned the fraudulent activities and urged customers to be vigilant when approached by individuals offering meter sales. He reiterated the importance of using official channels for transactions, including bill payments and meter inquiries.
Lasaki also highlighted another case involving Ifeanyi Enekwunchi, who was arraigned for tampering with electrical wires and illegal reconnection after being disconnected for non-payment. Eko DisCo has made it clear that it will take strict legal action against such offenses.
“I appeal to our customers to use our official channels for all transactions. For any clarifications, they can contact our customer service, reach us via social media, or visit our offices,” Lasaki said. He emphasized that staff members should not receive any form of gratuity, as they are employed to assist customers.
The company cautioned against illegal activities, stating that it will not tolerate any breaches of the law and encourages customers to seek proper solutions for their issues rather than resorting to self-help.
