EFCC to grill Tompolo over naira abuse at birthday party

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has announced it will question former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo—popularly known as Tompolo—over alleged abuse of the naira during his recent 54th birthday celebration.

The agency made the disclosure on Monday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, posting a message that read, “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!” The post included an image reportedly showing naira notes being sprayed during the party.

The move comes after a video went viral on Sunday, showing a man spraying ₦1,000 notes as Tompolo danced. The clip, originally shared by X user @harreceipts, reignited public criticism over the misuse of Nigeria’s currency at social events, and prompted direct calls for EFCC intervention.

Social media users were quick to accuse the commission of double standards. One user, @NejeebBello, questioned the EFCC’s silence over similar incidents involving wealthy elites. “What about the Eleganza sons who filmed themselves abusing the naira?” he asked.

Another user, @OurFavOnlineDoc, shared the clip of Tompolo, writing: “This is clearly a breach. Let the world see how justice is selectively applied.”

The controversy follows a string of high-profile naira abuse cases. Businessman Emeka Okonkwo (E-Money) and celebrities Iyabo Ojo and Ayo Makun were recently summoned by the EFCC over similar allegations.

Spraying or mishandling the naira is a punishable offence under the EFCC Act and the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, with violators facing fines or imprisonment.

The EFCC says it will continue to crack down on currency abuse, regardless of the personalities involved.
