CANAL+ and MultiChoice have announced a restructuring of DStv subscription packages across several African markets, reducing the number of tiers to four and introducing lower prices in countries including Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya.
The changes, scheduled to take effect on November 5, 2026, are part of the companies’ “Expect More” campaign, which aims to improve affordability and attract subscribers amid intensifying competition in Africa’s pay-TV market.
Under the new structure, subscribers in several African markets will be moved to four packages: Starter, Select, Sports and Ultimate, with the existing Premium package renamed Ultimate.
Nigeria, however, will retain Premium as its highest subscription tier, while South Africa and Botswana will continue to offer five packages.
Speaking at the launch in Nairobi, MultiChoice Kenya CEO Nzola Miranda said the restructuring marks a strategic shift towards growing subscriber numbers rather than depending on higher subscription fees.
“You either increase prices, you get more money from fewer people, or you increase the number of customers, even if they pay less,” Miranda said.
“Our focus is on giving subscribers better value and access to the entertainment they love,” said Kemi Omotosho, CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria,
“The strength of our platform is the combination of African entertainment, leading international content and unrivalled live sports in one place. We’ve reimagined our packages to better reflect how customers watch today, with tailored options specifically for general entertainment and sports fans.”
The restructuring includes significant subscription price cuts in selected African markets, with Kenya and Ghana among the countries set to benefit from the reductions.
In Ghana, the four packages will cost GH¢50, GH¢100, GH¢250 and GH¢570 monthly, following discussions between the government and MultiChoice on subscription affordability.
In Kenya, the Starter package will cost KES750 monthly, Select KES1,500, Sports KES3,000 and Ultimate KES7,300, down from KES11,700 for the previous highest-tier package.
In Uganda, monthly subscription fees will be Shs25,000 for Starter, Shs60,000 for Select, Shs100,000 for Sports and Shs185,000 for Ultimate.
In Nigeria, DStv Starter will cost N6,000 monthly, Select N11,000, Sports N21,000 and Premium N44,500.
The new Sports package will offer access to all English Premier League and UEFA Champions League matches, alongside WWE and UFC programming.
Ultimate subscribers will have access to additional sports content, including Formula 1, MotoGP, cricket, rugby, tennis and golf, depending on the market.
The restructuring comes as CANAL+ seeks to rebuild MultiChoice’s subscriber base following years of declining subscriptions and repeated price increases across several African markets.
