DoorDash launches fuel relief program for drivers amid rising fuel prices

DoorDash has launched a temporary relief program for its drivers in the United States and Canada as rising fuel costs, linked to escalating geopolitical tensions involving the U.S. and Iran, continue to squeeze gig workers.

The delivery platform announced on Monday that it is introducing a set of measures aimed at easing the financial burden on Dashers who depend on their personal vehicles for deliveries.

DoorDash’s relief program, which runs through April 26, provides weekly payments to eligible drivers.

Dashers who complete at least 125 miles per week are eligible for payouts starting at $5, with estimated savings equivalent to about $1 to $1.50 per gallon.

The company said the support could be particularly beneficial for drivers operating in suburban and rural areas, where longer travel distances are often required.

In addition, drivers using DoorDash’s Crimson debit card will receive an extra 10 per cent cash back on gas purchases, potentially saving up to $1.90 per gallon.
Gasoline remains one of the largest expenses for delivery drivers.

Unlike traditional employees, gig workers are responsible for covering their own costs, including fuel, vehicle maintenance, and insurance.

The gas rewards program echoes a similar initiative DoorDash rolled out in 2022 when fuel prices surged following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Recall hat year, Uber introduced a fuel surcharge to help support drivers, while Grubhub boosted pay for its delivery workers as gas prices hit record highs.
