Donald Trump unveils new 10% global tariff after court setback

Donald Trump said Friday he plans to sign an executive order introducing a new 10 per cent “global tariff,” just hours after the United States Supreme Court struck down his broad “reciprocal” import duties in a major setback to his trade agenda.

Speaking at a press briefing at the White House, Trump said the new tariffs would be added to existing levies that remain in force following the court’s decision, while criticizing the ruling as “deeply disappointing.”

“I’m ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed for not having the courage to do what’s right for our country,” Trump said.

The court ruling struck down the legal foundation for many of the tariffs that Trump argues are vital to strengthening the U.S. economy and reviving the country’s shrinking manufacturing sector.

Trump insisted he would pursue alternative measures to impose tariffs without seeking approval from U.S. Congress.

“I don’t have to,” Trump said when asked why he did not want to work with the legislative branch. “I have the right to do tariffs.”

Trump’s remarks swung between defiance and sharp criticism, as he also targeted Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett—both of whom he nominated, after they joined the majority in the 6–3 tariff ruling.

“I think their decision was terrible,” Trump said. “I think it’s an embarrassment to their families, you want to know the truth. The two of them.”

The U.S. president said he will sign an executive order later Friday imposing the new duties under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. Tariffs introduced under that provision can remain in place for only 150 days, with any extension requiring approval from Congress.
