Dangote ships 456,000 tonnes of refined products to global markets

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has exported 456,000 tonnes of refined petroleum products across 12 cargoes lifted by international traders.

Industry sources said the shipments, consisting of Premium Motor Spirit, were delivered to several African countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana, and Togo, according to Nairameteics.

This comes after the refinery attained its full nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day in February.

The products were sold on a Free on Board (FOB) basis to international traders, who oversaw delivery to their respective destinations.

Industry sources said the milestone underscores the refinery’s capacity to satisfy Nigeria’s domestic fuel demand while expanding exports to regional markets.

They added that with its increased capacity, the Dangote refinery is now positioned as a major supplier of refined petroleum products across Africa, signaling a shift in Nigeria’s role from a net fuel importer to an emerging exporter.

It was also gathered that the refinery is supplying Euro 5 standard gasoline and diesel, providing higher-quality fuel options to markets that have traditionally depended on lower-grade imports.

Several governments are scrambling to secure alternative sources of refined petroleum products, according to Bloomberg.

Officials and stakeholders said the surge in demand is driven more by concerns over fuel availability than pricing, as countries prioritise energy security.

Governments are also moving to diversify supply sources to reduce risks linked to disruptions in the Middle East.

About 75 per cent of the refinery’s output is allocated to Nigeria, while the remaining capacity is available for export.

In February, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery announced it had reached its full designed capacity of 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day (bpd), becoming the first refinery globally to attain full nameplate capacity in a single train of that scale.

The refinery said the milestone followed the optimisation of its Crude Distillation Unit and Motor Spirit production block, further reinforcing stable, steady-state operations at Africa’s largest oil refining facility.
