Dangote Refinery loses N32.5bn after petrol price cut

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Africa’s largest, is poised to reach its full operational capacity of 650,000 barrels per day within the next 30 days.

This was disclosed by the the Head of the Refinery, Edwin Devakumar, on Monday, according to Reuters.

Devakumar stated that the Dangote Refinery, built by Aliko Dangote in Lagos, began processing crude into diesel, naphtha, and jet fuel in January 2024 and started producing petrol in September.

Currently operating at 85% capacity, he stated, “We can go 100 percent in 30 days.”

He stated that the refinery had to import crude oil last year due to insufficient local supply, despite an agreement with the Nigerian government to purchase crude in naira.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited had said the Dangote Refinery has requested 550,000 barrels per day of crude from Nigerian oil producers for January to June this year.

NNPCL also warned that it would block export permits for producers that fail to meet their local supply quotas.

The Dangote Oil Refinery is also exploring new markets for its refined products.

Devakumar said the refinery is actively exploring all available markets to expand its reach.

While it aims to compete with European refiners at full capacity, it has struggled to secure enough local crude.
