Dangote refinery slashes petrol price to ₦825 per litre

Dangote Refinery loses N32.5bn after petrol price cut

Dangote Petrochemicals Refinery has quietly reduced the ex-gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol, to N825 per litre, undercutting its publicly stated price of N835 per litre, industry sources confirmed Monday.

The price cut, implemented through a N10 per litre rebate offered to customers upon successful product loading at the refinery, allows marketers to retail petrol at a competitive range of N830 to N835 per litre.

While marketers initially pay N835 per litre, the refund is applied after loading and evacuation from the facility.

This strategic adjustment positions Dangote Refinery to capture greater market share, out pricing importing marketers and private depot owners. The move underscores the refinery’s growing influence in Nigeria’s fuel market as it continues to disrupt traditional pricing dynamics.

The official said, “The Dangote refinery has started giving a rebate on its products. It’s not an official reduction yet, but paid back after marketers buy products from them.”

Last month, Dangote Refinery reduced its gantry price twice in one week, slashing it by ₦45, from ₦880 to ₦835 per litre.

This move came after the resumption and full enforcement of the Naira-for-Crude policy, which allows local refiners to pay for crude oil in naira rather than U.S. dollars, following an earlier suspension.

Efforts to obtain an official response from Dangote Group spokesperson, Anthony Chiejina, regarding the price reduction proved futile, as he was unavailable for comment at the time of filing this report.
