Customs warns Nigerians against misuse of US visas

The Nigeria Customs Service has issued a warning following concerns raised by the United States Government over the misuse of U.S. entry visas by some Nigerian travelers.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the National Public Relations Officer of the service, Abdullahi Maiwada, cautioned that engaging in activities that violate the terms or purpose of a U.S. visa could have serious consequences.

He stressed that security checks on visa holders do not end at the point of entry into the United States.

“US authorities will continuously monitor the activities of visa holders, and visas can be revoked if holders are found to have violated US immigration protocols, import/export guidelines, and other laws,” Maiwada said.

He also reminded Nigerians travelling to the United States to declare any cash exceeding the $10,000 threshold or its equivalent at the point of entry or exit.

Additionally, travelers were urged to ensure that their baggage does not contain any prohibited items.

“It is pertinent to also note that passengers are encouraged to be law-abiding citizens and be of good conduct within and outside Nigeria. Intending passengers to the United States should know that whoever commits fraud in any jurisdiction will face legal consequences both under US and Nigerian laws,” he added.

He stressed that the Nigeria Customs Service is collaborating with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure the country complies with relevant requirements and avoids being placed on an expanded visa restriction list that could prevent genuine Nigerian travelers from entering the United States for lawful business and personal purposes.
