Coca-Cola to launch cane sugar version of classic soda

Coca-Cola announced Tuesday it will release a version of its classic soda made with American cane sugar, days after former President Donald Trump claimed on Truth Social that he persuaded the company to make the switch.

In its Tuesday earnings release, Coca-Cola confirmed that a cane sugar version of its flagship drink will launch later this year.

“As part of its ongoing innovation agenda, this fall in the United States, the company plans to launch an offering made with U.S. cane sugar to expand its Trademark Coca-Cola product range,” its news release said.

Coca-Cola sold in the U.S. is typically sweetened with corn syrup, while versions produced in countries like Mexico and across Europe are often made with cane sugar.

In the U.S., Coca-Cola made with cane sugar is commonly referred to as “Mexican Coke,” as it’s frequently imported from Mexico.

Coca-Cola said the new version made with U.S. cane sugar will complement its existing product lineup.

CEO James Quincey noted during Tuesday’s earnings call that the company already uses cane sugar in several products, including its tea, lemonade, coffee, and Vitamin Water brands.

“I think that it will be an enduring option for consumer,” he said. “We are definitely looking to use the whole toolkit of available sweetening options where there are consumer preferences.”
