ChatGPT tests new ‘Study Together’ feature for students

OpenAI mulls $500bn valuation in employee share sale talks

OpenAI appears to be quietly testing a new ChatGPT feature called “Study Together”, which some users say is beginning to appear in the drop-down list of available tools on the platform.

Though still unannounced, early reports suggest that the new mode shifts ChatGPT’s role from providing answers to encouraging active learning. Instead of simply responding to questions, it appears to ask users follow-up questions, prompting them to think and respond, potentially positioning the chatbot as a digital study partner rather than a shortcut to answers.

Some users speculate that the feature could eventually support collaborative learning, allowing multiple people to join a shared study session — a kind of virtual study group. However, OpenAI has not confirmed any of these details and did not respond to media requests for comment.

In a response within the app, ChatGPT itself acknowledged the limited rollout, stating, “OpenAI hasn’t officially announced when or if Study Together will be available to all users — or if it will require ChatGPT Plus.”

The new feature comes as ChatGPT continues to make waves in education. It’s being embraced by teachers for lesson planning and by students for tutoring support — and, controversially, for essay writing and test prep. Educators remain divided on its role, with some praising its potential to enhance learning, while others fear it undermines academic integrity.

“Study Together” could be OpenAI’s attempt to steer its tool toward more constructive educational use — encouraging engagement and comprehension rather than shortcuts or cheating.

As of now, the feature remains in limited testing, and it’s unclear when or if it will be widely rolled out. Still, its development signals OpenAI’s continued investment in reshaping how students and educators interact with artificial intelligence.
