ChatGPT set to reach 700m weekly users amid rise in AI users

ChatGPT mobile app hits $2bn in global consumer spending

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s flagship chatbot, is on track to reach 700 million weekly active users this week, marking another milestone in its rapid growth as one of the world’s most popular consumer AI apps.

The figure was shared by Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and head of the ChatGPT app, in a post on X. According to Turley, the app has seen a fourfold increase in usage over the past year and had previously crossed the 500 million weekly user mark by the end of March.

“Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving harder problems,” Turley wrote. “Big week ahead. Grateful to the team for making ChatGPT more useful and delivering on our mission so everyone can benefit from AI.”

Part of the app’s growth has been driven by new features. In March, OpenAI launched an upgraded image-generation capability powered by GPT-4, allowing users to generate images alongside text-based outputs. The feature quickly gained traction: just days after the launch, more than 130 million users had created over 700 million images, according to OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap.

Subscription growth has also accelerated. Lightcap recently said that ChatGPT now has five million paying business users, up from three million in June.

A report from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower highlighted ChatGPT’s growing user engagement. The report found that in the first half of 2025, users spent an average of 16 minutes per day on the app and returned to it more than 12 days each month—figures that place ChatGPT behind only Google and X in terms of regular mobile usage.

The continued rise underscores how deeply generative AI is becoming embedded in users’ daily digital routines.
