Captain America 'Brave New World' nears N300m at Nigerian Box Office

Captain America: Brave New World is maintaining its strong performance at the Nigerian box office, edging closer to the N300 million milestone after three weeks in cinemas.

The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe earned an additional N43.9 million between February 28 and March 2, pushing its total box office revenue in Nigeria to N298 million, according to figures released by the Nigerian Box Office.

Brave New World debuted with an impressive N137.5 million during its opening weekend, securing the title of the biggest premiere of 2025 in Nigeria. The film also dominated the box office during the Valentine’s weekend (February 14–16), reinforcing Nigeria’s growing appetite for superhero blockbusters.

Distributed locally by FilmOne Entertainment, the movie amassed N226 million within its first two weeks, with a further N57.2 million recorded between February 21 and 23.

Marvel Studios and Disney have increasingly turned their focus to Nigeria as a key emerging market for Hollywood releases. The consistent success of Brave New World underscores the country’s rising influence in global box office dynamics.

While Captain America: Brave New World has topped the global box office for three consecutive weekends, its international performance has sparked mixed reactions. The film, directed by Julius Onah, marks Anthony Mackie’s first solo portrayal of Captain America following his character Sam Wilson’s transition into the role in Avengers: Endgame.

Domestically, the movie retained the number one spot in the U.S. with an estimated $15 million this past weekend, though its momentum was somewhat dampened by the 2025 Academy Awards. Worldwide, Brave New World has grossed $341.8 million, surpassing The Incredible Hulk (2008) at $265.5 million and The Marvels (2023) at $199.7 million—Marvel’s lowest-grossing film to date. Projections suggest the film may end its theatrical run around the $400 million mark, placing it near Eternals ($401.7 million) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($432.2 million).

However, unlike those titles, which were affected by pandemic-era restrictions, Brave New World enjoyed an unimpeded release, raising concerns about its underwhelming global performance.

Critics have given the film a lukewarm reception, with a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Nevertheless, audiences have responded more positively, reflected in an 80% approval score from general viewers.

Brave New World serves as a soft reboot of the Captain America franchise, following Chris Evans’ departure as Steve Rogers and passing the shield to Sam Wilson.
