Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Wednesday issued a ruling requiring billionaire Elon Musk to appoint a legal representative for his messaging platform X in Brazil within 24 hours.
Failure to comply could result in the suspension of X’s operations in the country, according to the court’s decision.
Earlier this month, X announced plans to shut down its operations and lay off its staff in Brazil, citing what it described as “censorship orders” from Moraes. Despite this, the platform’s services would remain accessible to users in Brazil.
The Supreme Court shared a screenshot of the ruling on its X account, tagging both Musk’s and X’s Global Government Affairs accounts. X has not yet responded to a request for comment made outside of normal business hours.
The court’s decision highlights that under Brazilian internet regulations, companies failing to adhere to local laws or protect private information may face temporary suspension of their activities.
