Botswana Power Corporation appoints Akinwole II Omoboriowo vice chairman

Botswana Power Corporation has appointed a Nigerian energy specialist, Akinwole II Omoboriowo as Vice Chairman and Board Member, aiming to boost its leadership and strategic direction.

Announced on BPC’s official website, the move comes as the country works to resolve electricity supply challenges, grow its renewable energy capacity, and emerge as a net exporter of clean energy in the near future.

Omoboriowo, a distinguished leader in African power infrastructure and energy finance, brings more than 20 years of experience in utility-scale generation, project structuring, and cross-border energy development.

He currently serves as Chairman and CEO of GENESIS Energy Group, where he has overseen utility-scale projects totaling over 780MW—spanning operational, under-construction, and advanced development phases—across Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, Zambia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Mali, and the United Kingdom, with a project pipeline exceeding 4.5GW.

His expertise covers conventional power infrastructure, distributed energy solutions (renewable and gas), natural gas commercialization, energy market reforms, and specialized energy investment financing—skills directly aligned with Botswana’s ongoing energy reform priorities.

Omoboriowo steps into BPC leadership at a critical time as the corporation drives its Maduo 26 strategy, a five-year transformation initiative launched in 2022 to enhance operational efficiency, strengthen financial performance, and establish the utility as a regional standard in energy supply.

Observers highlight that the plan supports Botswana’s national objectives to diversify its energy mix, expand renewable generation, and improve grid resilience, all central to the country’s Integrated Resource Plan.

His appointment underscores BPC’s commitment to expanding renewable energy capacity, boosting regional power trade within the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), enhancing grid resilience and operational performance, and attracting investment into sustainable energy infrastructure.

Within this framework, BPC aims not only to stabilize Botswana’s electricity supply but also to position the country as a net exporter within the Southern African Power Pool.

Omoboriowo’s leadership will focus on corporate structural realignment, capital efficiency, strengthened governance, and ensuring that infrastructure investments deliver tangible operational and commercial results.
