Borno gov raises CJTF, vigilantes’ monthly allowance to ₦50,000

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved an increase in the monthly allowances for security volunteers under the Borno Youth Empowerment Scheme, known as the Civilian Joint Task Force, Vigilantes, Hunters, and Neighbourhood Watch.

The decision highlights the state government’s commitment to supporting individuals who risk their lives daily to protect communities and restore lasting peace in Borno.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dauda Iliya, and obtained by journalists on Saturday in Maiduguri, confirmed that Governor Zulum approved raising the monthly allowance for each volunteer from ₦30,000 to ₦50,000, while leaders of the volunteer groups will now receive ₦150,000 each.

The revised allowances have already begun reaching beneficiaries’ accounts, bringing the state’s monthly expenditure on the scheme to ₦232.4 million.

These volunteer groups have served as vital partners in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency, supporting the Nigerian military and other security agencies to maintain peace and stability across Borno State.

Upon taking office in 2019, Governor Zulum first raised volunteers’ monthly allowances from ₦15,000 to ₦20,000, and later increased it further to ₦30,000. The state government has consistently paid ₦30,000 monthly to each volunteer since then.

However, current economic challenges, rising living costs, and heightened operational risks have necessitated another review.

“The Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), Vigilantes, Hunters, and Neighbourhood Watch have consistently demonstrated gallantry, resilience, and unwavering commitment in the fight against Boko Haram insurgents,” Zulum stated.

“In recognition of these sacrifices and in appreciation of their steadfast dedication to peace and security, His Excellency has approved an upward review of the monthly allowance for each volunteer from ₦30,000.00 to ₦50,000.00, while leaders of the volunteer groups will now receive ₦150,000.00 each,” he added.

The increase takes effect from January 2026, with 45 leaders benefiting from the new leadership allowance.

The enhanced stipends are expected to boost morale, improve operational effectiveness, and strengthen the volunteers’ determination to support ongoing security efforts.

Their contributions include arresting key insurgent commanders and providing critical intelligence that has prevented attacks and saved lives and property in communities across the state.

Governor Zulum commended the volunteers for their patriotism, courage, and selfless service, urging them to remain disciplined, rededicate themselves to duty, and continue collaborating with security agencies to entrench lasting peace, stability, and development in Borno State.
