Boeing reaches $50,000 settlement with family of late whistleblower

Hacker group Lockbit leaks Boeing data

Boeing has agreed to pay a minimum of $50,000 to resolve a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of John Barnett, a whistleblower who died by suicide last year.

In March 2024, Barnett, a former Boeing employee, died by suicide while giving a deposition in a lawsuit he had filed, claiming he faced retaliation for raising safety concerns at the company, according to Bloomberg.

His death drew global attention and intensified scrutiny of Boeing’s manufacturing culture, particularly at its 787 Dreamliner plant in North Charleston, South Carolina.

It also came as the company was under federal investigation into a separate incident in which a door plug detached midair from a 737 Max built at a Seattle-area factory.

According to a Friday court filing in Charleston, United States, both parties agreed to a “full, final and confidential settlement” that would dismiss all claims brought by Barnett and his estate, including the case he was pursuing at the time of his death.

The broader terms of the agreement, including any additional payments by Boeing, were not disclosed.

“We are saddened by Mr. Barnett’s death and extend our condolences to his family as we reach this resolution,” the company said in an emailed statement. “Boeing took actions several years ago to review and address the issues that Mr. Barnett raised.”

From the $50,000 wrongful death settlement, $20,000 will be allocated to legal fees and costs, with the remainder going to Barnett’s family.

The filing notes that Boeing “denies and continues to deny” that any of its actions or failures contributed to Barnett’s injury or death.
