Bluesky briefly suspends US VP JD Vance’s account

United States Vice President JD Vance faced a brief suspension on Bluesky shortly after joining the decentralized social network on Wednesday evening.

The incident, which sparked confusion among users, was quickly resolved, with the platform attributing the action to an automated system designed to flag potential impersonation attempts.

“Vice President Vance’s account was briefly flagged by our automated systems that try to detect impersonation attempts, which have targeted public figures like him in the past,” a Bluesky spokesperson said in a statement to TechCrunch. “The account was quickly restored and verified so people can easily confirm its authenticity.”

The spokesperson added that Bluesky welcomes Vance to the platform, encouraging open dialogue.

Vance’s first post addressed a controversial U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding a Tennessee law that restricts gender-affirming care for transgender minors—a topic likely to stir debate on the platform.

Bluesky, which has positioned itself as an alternative to traditional social media giants, has been working to improve its moderation and verification systems as more high-profile figures begin to join.
