Bills without customer ID now invalid – Ikeja DisCo

Discos to resume meter deployment - IKEDC

Ikeja Electric Plc has announced that electricity bills issued without valid customer identification will be deemed invalid, in accordance with the Nigeria Tax Act (2025).

The company stated that this requirement takes effect from January 1, 2026, the date the Act officially came into force. Under the law, all invoices, including electricity bills, must include at least one approved form of customer identification.

In a public notice shared with our correspondent, Ikeja Electric stated that acceptable identification on electricity bills includes a Tax Identification Number, Corporate Affairs Commission, registration number, or National Identification Number.

The company explained that this requirement is intended to ensure compliance with the provisions of the NTA (2025) and to guarantee that customer information is accurately reflected on electricity bills starting from January 2026 and for all subsequent billing cycles.

“The Nigeria Tax Act (2025), which came into effect on January 1, 2026, mandates that all invoices—including electricity bills—must contain at least one of the following identification details: Tax Identification Number, CAC Registration Number, or National Identification Number,” the company said.

Thus, Ikeja Electric urged customers to provide one of the required identification details by completing the company’s designated form.

“To enable us to comply with this statutory requirement and reflect the information on your January 2026 and subsequent bills, we kindly request that you provide any one of the above details,” the notice read.

The electricity distributor also set February 13, 2026, as the deadline for submitting the required information, cautioning that failure to comply may result in serious consequences for affected customers.

“Please note that the deadline for submission is February 13, 2026,” the company stated.

The company warned that any invoice issued without the mandatory identification details will be considered invalid under the law. Consequently, customers who fail to submit the required information may not receive electricity bills after the deadline.

“In line with the provisions of the Act, any invoice issued without this information is considered invalid. Consequently, failure to provide the required details may prevent us from generating your electricity bill and could lead to the suspension of service after the stated deadline,” Ikeja Electric added.

The notice urged customers to cooperate and comply promptly with the directive.
