Berlin blackout enters second day after suspected arson attack

A widespread power outage in Berlin, Germany stretched into a second day on Wednesday, leaving around 20,000 households and businesses without electricity after a suspected arson attack on two pylons.

Full restoration is not expected until Thursday evening.

The blackout, which initially affected about 50,000 customers in the German capital’s southeast, has disrupted daily operations for both residents and local companies.

Operators are working to gradually restore service, but officials said repairs are proving complex.

German security agencies have launched an investigation into what they believe may have been a politically motivated act.

Berlin’s grid operator said the damaged cables are beyond use, with crews working overnight to reroute power through alternative lines.

The company described the process of digging up underground links and installing replacements as “very complex” and requiring several hours.

Customers whose supply has been restored are being urged to conserve electricity to help stabilize the grid.

Authorities also warned residents against using grills or camping equipment indoors for cooking, and advised unplugging devices to avoid damage when power returns.
