Bayelsa State’s new airline, operated by Pioneer Airlines, successfully completed its inaugural flight from Abuja on Wednesday.
Governor Douye Diri, alongside a delegation of prominent indigenes, was greeted by a large crowd upon landing at the Bayelsa International Airport.
The flight carried high-profile passengers, including the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and the rest Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission.
Upon its arrival at the airport, the aircraft was honored with a ceremonial water cannon salute, a traditional aviation gesture to mark its inaugural flight.
Addressing the crowd, Governor Diri called the event a historic step toward connecting Bayelsa to the nation and the world.
He said it was a moment for celebration and gratitude, marking a decisive expansion of the state’s aviation capacity and economic opportunities.
He said, “Six years ago, we promised the people of Bayelsa a future of air connectivity and opportunity. Today, that promise takes wing: Bayelsa is launching its own commercial air services.
“On behalf of your Government of Renewed Hope for Assured Prosperity, I am delighted to commission the first of two ATR-72/600 aircraft, each configured to carry 72 passengers and crew.
“This achievement marks the beginning of a new era of connectivity for Bayelsa, bringing regular and reliable air services that fuel modern commerce and development, connecting businesses to new markets, and empowering our people to thrive.”
Governor Diri directed that the aircraft be renamed “Air Bayelsa” or “Bayelsa Air” before it begins commercial operations, insisting the name must clearly reflect its state ownership.
He also honoured his predecessors, the late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who first envisioned the airport, and former Governor Seriake Dickson, who completed it.
He thanked Premium Trust Bank, Pioneer Airlines, and the state House of Assembly for their roles in acquiring the aircraft.
The Managing Director of Bayelsa Airport Limited, Air Vice-Marshal Nelson Calmday (rtd), outlined the flight schedule, which will connect Bayelsa to major cities like Lagos and Abuja, as well as key Niger Delta hubs including Port Harcourt, Warri, Uyo, and Calabar.
He praised the governor for funding the project with state assets rather than loans and confirmed that the cabin crew have completed training and are ready for operations.
The Managing Director of Pioneer Airlines, Capt. Henry Ungbuku, pledged that the airline would honor the aspirations of the Bayelsan people.
The CEO of Premium Trust Bank, Mr. Emmanuel Emefienim, highlighted the project as a landmark achievement born from a strong partnership, expressing pride in the bank’s role.
