"Barbie" tops Nigerian Box Office, earns N177m

“Barbie,” the newest blockbuster, has amassed a phenomenal $155 million in North American box office receipts.

Nairametrics reported that the Nigerian market, on the other hand, responded more subduedly, with the film earning N39 million over the weekend.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” which was released in Nigerian theatres for the first time, made N39,354,233.

Despite the lower total, the film led the weekend in ticket sales, outpacing “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One” by more than N7 million.

Following its debut in Nigeria, Barbie has sold N39 million worth of tickets and at Film House Cinemas Nigeria for the pink carpet event, the most prominent figures from the country turned out in force, decked out in their best “Barbie Girls” and “Just Kens” ensembles.

Filmhouse Cinema held a brunch party with a Barbie theme before the premiere at the Art Hotel to build enthusiasm for the movie’s July 21, 2023 release.

With impressive earnings of $182 million from 69 different countries, “Barbie” saw notable success internationally. This success helped “Barbie” contribute to an astounding $337 million in worldwide weekend box office receipts.

The Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-starring movie “Barbie” has outperformed other noteworthy releases like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and several Marvel movies, becoming the year’s biggest opening.

According to Variety, the film’s successful performance can be partly credited to its hefty $150 million marketing expenditure.

According to a Forbes article featuring an interview with director Greta Gerwig, the production budget was projected to be $145 million.

In order to promote “Barbie,” Warner Bros’ marketing division formed alliances with numerous goods that relate to the film’s themes.

The excellent filmmaker of “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig, began production on the film in December 2016.

Amy Schumer was originally going to play the lead, but due to creative issues, she had to withdraw.

Margot Robbie eventually earned the iconic role of the Mattel doll in January 2019, while Ryan Gosling joined the cast in October 2021 as Barbie’s plastic partner, Ken.

The movie’s popularity stands out as a respite from the difficulties the COVID-19 outbreak caused in the entertainment sector.
