Aviation unions threaten sector shutdown over salary dispute

Unions in the aviation sector have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, over the continued failure to implement a new salary structure for staff of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.

In a joint letter dated July 31, 2025, the unions warned that if the matter is not resolved by August 7, NAMA workers will withdraw their services—an action that could cripple operations across Nigeria’s aviation sector.

They expressed deep frustration that, despite concluding negotiations with NAMA management more than eight months ago, the agreed salary adjustments have yet to be implemented.

The letter was signed by the General Secretaries of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, National Union of Air Transport Employees, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees.

The unions noted that their rank-and-file members, particularly through their professional associations, had repeatedly expressed their frustration in writing over the prolonged non-implementation of the agreed salary adjustments.

The letter partly reads, “Recognising that notice of ultimatum has already been issued and served by our branches, which our national unions have adopted; a seven-day notice of withdrawal of services from today, Thursday, the 31st day of July, 2025, is hereby issued.”

The unions warned that if the issue remains unresolved by the end of the ultimatum, all NAMA workers across the country will begin a total withdrawal of their services.

They also advised all NAMA clients to take note of the impending action.
