Apple has followed Google’s lead by officially renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its Apple Maps service, less than a week after President Donald Trump ordered the name change.

Users accessing Apple Maps in the United States will now see Lake America instead of Lake Ontario, one of North America’s five Great Lakes. The updated name will be displayed on both the Apple Maps website and mobile app.

However, the change is limited to users in the US. Apple Maps users in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario, while users outside the US and Canada will see both names.

The change follows an executive order signed by Trump on August 27, directing the Interior Department to update the lake’s name in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System and other federal databases within 30 days.

“In recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation’s economy and its people, I am directing that the Lake officially be renamed as Lake America,” the order reads.

Trump’s directive, along with Apple and Google’s decision to adopt the new name, has further strained relations between the United States and Canada following the breakdown of trade talks between the two countries.

Apple has not commented on the change.

Google, however, explained its decision, saying it updates place names to reflect changes in official government sources, including the Geographic Names Information System.
