Apple’s top executive overseeing artificial intelligence models, Ruoming Pang, is leaving the tech giant to join rival Meta Platforms, according to a report by Bloomberg News on Monday.
Pang, who led Apple’s foundation models team, is set to take a key role in Meta’s recently launched Superintelligence Labs division. The move reportedly comes with a compensation package worth several million dollars annually.
Neither Apple nor Meta responded to requests for comment from Reuters.
The high-profile departure underscores the intensifying battle among tech giants to secure top talent as they race to dominate the next phase of artificial intelligence development. Meta, in particular, has stepped up its recruitment efforts, offering lucrative deals to attract leading AI minds.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently restructured the company’s AI strategy, consolidating its efforts under the new Meta Superintelligence Labs. The division is headed by Alexandr Wang, the 28-year-old former CEO of data-labeling firm Scale AI, which Meta invested in last month at a $29 billion valuation.
Pang’s exit adds to growing pressure on Apple, which has faced criticism for lagging behind in the generative AI space compared to competitors like Meta, Google, and Microsoft.
