Spotify announced on Monday that iPhone users in the United States can now purchase audiobooks directly through its app, marking a significant change made possible by a recent Apple policy shift.
The new update allows users to view audiobook prices and buy additional listening hours — a long-requested feature previously blocked by Apple’s strict in-app purchase rules. Spotify had removed in-app audiobook purchases in 2022, forcing users to complete transactions through a web browser.
“This change lowers the barriers for more users to embrace their first — or tenth — audiobook, while allowing publishers and authors to reach fans and access new audiences seamlessly,” Spotify said in a statement.
The move comes in the wake of a U.S. court ruling that ordered Apple to loosen its restrictions on third-party app payments, including bans on directing users to external purchasing platforms.
With the update, Spotify users can now not only buy audiobooks in a few taps but also purchase top-up listening time — an option that previously required visiting Spotify’s website. Each top-up costs \$13 for an additional 10 hours of listening, beyond the initial 15 hours provided.
Earlier this month, Apple also approved an update allowing Spotify to share subscription pricing and direct payment links within its iOS app — another shift reflecting growing regulatory pressure on the tech giant.
The latest update is expected to boost Spotify’s growing audiobook business and improve the user experience for iPhone listeners.
