The Airline Operators of Nigeria have praised President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, for promptly suspending the proposed four per cent Free on Board levy on imports.
The proposed FOB levy had sparked widespread concern among manufacturers, importers, and customs agents, who warned that it could exacerbate inflation.
The finance minister noted that the levy, introduced by the Nigeria Customs Service, posed risks to trade facilitation, economic stability, and the overall business climate in the country.
Edun explained that the suspension came in response to widespread concerns from manufacturers, importers, and clearing agents, who warned that the levy could fuel inflation, undermine trade competitiveness, and weaken the investment climate.
In a statement on Tuesday, AON President Abdulmunaf Sarina described the suspension as “a clear demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment, safeguarding critical sectors of the economy, and promoting sustainable growth.”
AON warned that implementing the proposed levy would have severely impacted airlines in Nigeria, sharply raising operational costs in a sector already facing significant economic challenges.
The operators stressed that the measure could further strain the industry, potentially affecting jobs, service quality, and the overall competitiveness of Nigerian aviation.
The statement partly reads, “This bold and thoughtful intervention will go a long way in safeguarding the aviation sector, protecting jobs, reducing inflationary pressures, and ensuring that Nigeria remains competitive in the global business environment.”
AON commended the Minister for his “exemplary leadership as a listening Minister,” highlighting that his attentiveness to stakeholders demonstrates both patriotism and a strong commitment to fairness, diligence, and national economic development.
AON reiterated its commitment to partnering with the Federal Government to bolster the aviation industry, while expressing full support for the President’s wider economic agenda.
