A United States federal judge has ruled in favour of Anthropic in its complex legal dispute with the Trump administration, granting the AI company an injunction against the government’s recent “supply chain risk” designation, the Wall Street Journal reports.
On Thursday, Judge Rita F. Lin of the Northern District of California ordered the administration to revoke its designation of Anthropic as a security risk and to halt directives requiring federal agencies to sever ties with the company.
“It looks like an attempt to cripple Anthropic,” Lin reportedly said during the court proceedings.
Lin contended that the government’s orders violated the company’s free speech rights.
Tensions between the Pentagon and Anthropic erupted last month over the government’s use of the company’s AI software.
Anthropic reportedly sought to set limits on how its models could be used, including prohibiting applications in autonomous weapons systems and mass surveillance.
The government rejected those restrictions, ultimately designating Anthropic as a “supply chain risk”—a label usually reserved for foreign entities. President Trump also directed federal agencies to sever ties with the company.
