Anthropic has introduced a web search feature for its AI-powered chatbot platform, Claude, aligning it with competitors that offer real-time internet access.
While the search index powering the feature was initially unclear, evidence suggests that it is driven by Brave Search, the search engine maintained by browser developer Brave.
Software engineer Antonio Zugaldia first spotted the connection on Friday, noting that Anthropic had added “Brave Search” to its “subprocessor list” in its documentation. This list details Anthropic’s partners involved in processing Claude’s data.
Additionally, British programmer Simon Willison reported that at least one query produced identical citations in both Claude and Brave Search. Willison also discovered a parameter labeled “BraveSearchParams” within Claude’s web search function, further supporting the link between the two platforms.
Anthropic has not officially confirmed the integration, and we have reached out for comment. This article will be updated with any response.
Brave’s search engine is already integrated into other AI chatbot platforms, including Mistral’s Le Chat. In February, Brave and Mistral announced that Le Chat would use Brave’s search API to deliver real-time web results.
Many AI companies remain secretive about their search index partnerships, likely for competitive reasons. OpenAI, for example, has an established partnership with Bing but also utilizes other undisclosed sources to enhance search functionality in ChatGPT.
