Advanced Micro Devices has introduced a new series of semiconductors tailored for AI-enhanced business laptops and desktops, aiming to capture a larger share of the lucrative “AI PC” market.
These chips are slated to be integrated into platforms offered by HP and Lenovo starting in the second quarter of 2024, as per AMD’s press release.
AI-capable PCs are designed to execute large-language models and applications powered by AI directly on the device, eliminating the need for cloud-based processing.
AMD highlighted its latest Ryzen PRO 8040 Series, designed for “business laptops and mobile workstations,” alongside the AMD Ryzen PRO 8000 Series, tailored for desktop use by business users.
AMD’s shares saw a rise of over 2% in early trading, signaling optimism from investors regarding the new product line. Analysts anticipate a potential revival in the PC market driven by the introduction of AI-enabled PCs, as consumers seek to upgrade their systems to leverage these advanced capabilities.
With the emergence of generative AI technology, there has been a surge in demand for sophisticated semiconductors capable of supporting and executing complex AI algorithms and applications.
In the AI PC market segment, AMD faces fierce competition from industry giants Intel and Nvidia, particularly known for their prowess in graphics processing units.
Earlier in January, AMD unveiled its Ryzen 8000G Series of desktop chips, catering to the demanding workloads associated with AI-driven tasks. On the same day, Nvidia introduced its own AI PC chips, the “GeForce RTX SUPER” desktop GPUs, announcing partnerships with Acer, ASUS, Dell Technologies, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung to release AI-equipped laptops featuring its technology.
Intel also joined the fray, announcing its plans in January to ship approximately 40 million AI PCs in 2024 alone, indicating the company’s commitment to capitalize on the growing demand for AI-enabled computing devices.
