Amazon has quietly begun to enable passkeys as it joins the passwordless future although users can continue to use their Amazon password for a little while longer,
The e-commerce giant’s website now offers the opportunity to set up a passkey, enabling customers to sign in using biometric identification on their device, like their fingerprint or face scan.
Due to the requirement that the attacker also have physical access to the victim’s device, doing this makes it far more difficult for malicious actors to remotely access users’ accounts.
On its website, Amazon states that “You will still need to verify a one-time code after signing in with the passkey,” but it doesn’t disclose why.
It’s unclear if Amazon wants to add passkey compatibility to its mobile apps or if the demand for 2FA codes is a temporary feature, and it is unknown at this time is if passkey support is accessible to all Amazon customers.
The launch of passkeys on Amazon coincides with WhatsApp’s announcement that it will make passkeys available to all Android users, and comes shortly after Google announced its intention to make passkeys the default sign-in option for all owners of Google Accounts.
Passkeys are now supported by GitHub, Windows 11, TikTok, and 1Password, among other applications.
