Amazon is overhauling its Wondery podcast division, shifting its award-winning narrative shows like Business Wars to Audible and consolidating creator-led programs into a new internal unit, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters.
The restructuring will result in approximately 110 job cuts, though many affected staff will be reassigned to other roles within Amazon, the company said in a statement on Monday.
Wondery CEO Jen Sargent will also exit the company after a transition period, the memo confirmed.
The move comes amid growing pressure in the audio streaming market, where companies are battling rising costs, slowing growth, and increasing competition from video-centric platforms like YouTube and Spotify. “As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs,” wrote Steve Boom, Amazon’s vice president overseeing audio, Twitch, and games.
Amazon acquired Wondery in 2021, and since then the studio’s podcast revenue has quadrupled. However, analysts say the latest restructuring reflects a broader strategic shift. “This isn’t just about layoffs—it’s the collapse of a podcast strategy that couldn’t keep pace with video-led rival platforms,” said Grace Harmon, analyst at eMarketer.
Under the new arrangement, Wondery’s narrative podcast team—responsible for hit series like Dr. Death and American Scandal—along with the Wondery+ subscription service, will be folded into Audible, Amazon’s audio platform.
Meanwhile, the team behind creator-focused shows such as Mind the Game, New Heights, and Armchair Expert will move to a new Creator Services group under Amazon’s Talent Services division. The creator studio will continue operating under the Wondery brand.
Amazon says the changes will allow it to better support podcast creators and help them monetize their content across platforms.
